Earth Sky Garden

Having the opportunity to create with the earth on such a large scale was not something I had ever anticipated before arriving to join the community at Taraloka. But this corner of land just outside the shrine room had remained virtually untouched for 35 years and the plan to finally do something with it came into being just 6 months after I arrived.

Ideas focused around the functions and qualities we wanted from the space, and My ideas developed around a spiral and a vision of earth meeting sky ….

People liked my vision for the site, and Craig, our dedicated and highly skilled builder/craftsman, could see the spiral in the land too – his enthusiasm and expertise would be absolutely vital to the success of the project.

Julia Hilton of Green Dreams generously drew up the plans and fundraising started in earnest January 2018

In March 2019 work began…

First, perimeter wall footings

Maitrisiddhi and I were treated to a visit to the local quarry… our selected rocks were put to one side and marked with a yellow stone on top. Some were so fragile that they were delivered on top of the crush ordered for the paving so as not to disintegrate.

By mid May the perimeter wall was virtually complete

By the end of May the footings and drainage for the inner spiral wall were complete too, and in June, we were holding retreats… the site and inner spiral wall became a decorated feature!

In November 2020

In December 2020

the Taraloka community and local volunteers prepared the soil and laid the first wild flower meadow turves, with groups of wild daffodil, crocus and tulip bulbs underneath. And below them was mole matting!

In June 2021 we started planting…

it was back breaking work removing compacted rubble and unwanted mole matting!

In October 2021 there was an official opening – in between covid lock-downs

In October 2023 work was finally complete
